I had one of life’s special experiences this week as I took my kid and her friends to a concert in Sydney. As we walked through Circular Quar it occurred to me that this would be the first gig for at least a couple of them. They’d probably remember it for the rest of their life! My kid’s first gig was as a swaddled baby when I supported Paul Kelly’s Spring and Fall Tour and she seems mostly unfazed by the magic. Sometimes she’ll hint at a certain pride that her old man works in these places but mostly doesn’t seem to care!

And so here we are at the Opera House among 1000s of people. We walk by the merch queues and the bar, into the hall and find our seats. Murmurs abound until the lights go down and the crowd roars in anticipation. Notes from the dramatic opening song ring out and sudden onset of super loud amplified music comes to life. It scared the crap out of one of her friends and it was fantastic (she was safe, but it was loud).

Songs feel different when performed live. Is it because I’m sharing an exclusive space with others who have similar taste, or the sound and the movement of the band? The lights and stage design or is it the crowd response? Is it the excited hushed chatting with friends to explain why a song means something to you? That its inherently tied to a memory or a relationship or a sharehouse or school yard and so on?

I’ve heard people talk about how live music brings out feelings, and feelings make us feel more alive. We cant skip songs like they’re playing on our phone. It’s not digital and disposable, it’s real and flawed and beautiful and when the songs mean something, it’s transcendent.

I’m so glad I went to this concert on the eve of my last farewell tour. It brought home how special live music is and how fortunate I’ve been to play so many cracking gigs over the years. It also reminded me how precious it all is, every single person in the room has a version of how the night went.

5 YEARS ON (volume ⬆️): I love that such a difficult time for me as an artist resulted in this record that gave me so much back.

It was an ambitious concept started in my mid 30s and released in my late 30s. I wiped my ego almost clean and entered without the burden of expectation so I enjoyed the release; the touring and everything about it, in a way that I’d kinda forgotten after so many years of album cycles and gigs and all the industry stuff.

Funny how the more professional and adept you become as an artist, the less enjoyable it can be. I gave everything to this record but I gave less of a fuck about *success* and just appreciated the privilege of being able to do it. Turned out that was the sweet spot 😍

Too many brilliant artists I got to work with who I can’t tag. Many barely use facebook anymore cos of how facebook uses artists. But I have so much love for Hermitude, Pip Norman, Kira Puru, Bertie Blackman, Jane Tyrrell, B Wise, Nic Martin, Sarah McCloskey, L-FRESH The LION, Mirrah, Okenyo, Jayteehazard, Claire Nakazawa, Meklit, Sampa the Great, Montaigne, Rahj Jordan, Dggz, Elefant Traks, Caitlin Park, Broken Yellow, Jen Ng.

Ty to Sereen Sounds for cutting this video together.

Exclusive: Hermitude go deep on The Buzz, break down its creation in new video

5 yrs ago Hermitude dropped Dark Night Sweet Light and it went #1. So hectic, 13 years after their first release with elefant traks. There is hope for all us artists! One song cut through and went multi-platinum with 100s of millions of streams. Gusto and Dubs opened up the session and deconstructed the song here

Lives have been lost. So many homes incinerated

Lives have been lost. So many homes incinerated. 😞

Environmental disasters are abstract until your family and friends are being evacuated and ash is falling from the sky. My heart is in the Blue Mountains as one of the biggest megafires on record bears down. But it’s also with all of NSW, from the North to the Central and South Coasts. We’ve all been burning and breathing hazardous smoke for a month now.

And SA… We’re watching those flames roar so close to your streets and homes. Terrifying.

Smoke had drifted 1000kms from NSW bushfires to hit Melbourne. What the hell. Memories of terrible Victorian fires must hang heavy and the threat is rising. The whole country is experiencing record temperatures and we’re seeing heatmaps of the whole country inked deep red.

Crazy to think about the courage and sacrifice of all the fire services standing between us and the burning chaos. It may be a job or a personal commitment but the levels of crazybrave that you’d need to stare it down and wade into the smoke is so deeply, profoundly appreciated. I read reports of RFS workers queuing up at Bunnings and paying for fire fighting gear out of their own pocket. Unfathomable that our gov’t seem so completely out of step with circumstances on the ground. Beyond appalled. And the worst seems yet to come, today is dangerous.

The environment should never have been an ideological battleground for humans to have a culture war. For too long we’ve been buried in debates about what is real rather than getting on with preparing for everyone’s future. It takes my breath away how casual govt has been these last few weeks and these things are clearly connected.

It’s a hard time for a lot of ppl on the eve of christmas.

It’s a good time to be with people you love.

Hoping you see this through 👊🏻💜

I hope Sampa the Great wins best hip hop at arias tonight

I hope Sampa the Great wins best hip hop at arias tonight. She’s done extraordinary things with this record, here and internationally. Respect to the Hoods, they’re icons and they win this every year they have music out (and will probably again). Big respect to Tkay, Baker Boy and also my fam Horrorshow, B Wise, Homeward Bound, Okenyo, Nooky and Tasman Keith.

Too many artists have sacrificed years of their lives and sanity to create their art and may never get a nomination, so take em with a big grain of salt. Awards will never sum up your value.

With the speed that hip hop is moving in this country, I feel like things will change forever from here on and I’m pumped about it.
