Rapper, comedy writer, actor, children’s book author, Shepparton’s finest, and Yorta-Yorta man Briggs has released his newest single ‘Extra Extra’ through Island Records. ‘Extra Extra’ is the first taste from Briggs’ forthcoming EP, and his first solo body of work since 2014’s ‘Sheplife’ and the ever acclaimed 2016 A.B. Original release ‘Reclaim Australia’.
Briggs says on the song “Extra, Extra” is how I live. No days off. Everything I do is Extra – you can check my resume for that. A lot of people know me for a lot of different things – but this is back to the fundamentals of who I am as Briggs.”
Produced by friend and collaborator Trials, Briggs explains the process of creating the song “Trials had the beat he put it on and I cooked it up that same day. This is us in our purest form: beat, rap & on to the next one.”
Contributing to the single’s artwork, respected indigenous artist Reko Rennie designed the geometric background element, with his distinctive style of merging traditional diamond-shaped designs, hand-drawn symbols and repetitive patterning to subvert romantic ideologies of Aboriginal identity.
Briggs has also made his first foray into publishing a book this month with his children’s title ‘Our Home, Our Heartbeat’, an adaptation from the celebrated song ‘The Children Came Back’. The book is a celebration of past and present Indigenous legends, as well as emerging generations, and at its heart honours the oldest continuous culture on earth.
Ever since the release of his debut EP ‘Homemade Bombs’ in 2009, Briggs has been making his mark as one of the country’s most prolific and diverse talents in media, music and comedy. Aside from his ARIA-dominating rap career and regular appearances on TV, his list of achievements is astounding. He is founder and owner of Indigenous hip hop record label Bad Apples Music, author of a new children’s book, a screenwriter for Matt Groening’s Netflix series Disenchantment and will soon be host of the upcoming virtual APRA awards.
